Things worth knowing about "Sun Protection"

Sun protection refers to measures that shield the skin from harmful UV radiation. It includes sunscreen, protective clothing, and behavioral guidelines to prevent sunburn and skin cancer.

What Is Sun Protection?

Sun protection refers to all measures that protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun or artificial light sources. UV radiation can cause sunburn in the short term and increase the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging in the long term. Effective sun protection is therefore an important part of daily skin care and health prevention.

Types of UV Radiation

The sun emits different types of UV radiation, each with distinct effects on the skin:

  • UVA radiation: Penetrates deep into the skin, causing long-term damage such as skin aging and increasing the risk of skin cancer.
  • UVB radiation: Primarily responsible for sunburn and also contributes to the development of skin cancer.
  • UVC radiation: Largely absorbed by the atmosphere and does not significantly reach the surface of the earth.

Forms of Sun Protection

Physical Sun Protection

Physical sun protection includes all measures that mechanically block UV radiation:

  • Protective clothing with tightly woven fabric or special UV-protective textiles (UPF rating)
  • Wide-brimmed hats to protect the face, neck, and ears
  • UV-blocking sunglasses to shield the eyes and surrounding skin
  • Staying in the shade, especially during peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Chemical and Mineral Sunscreens

Sunscreens are cosmetic products that filter or reflect UV radiation. They are classified according to the Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which indicates how much longer one can stay in the sun without getting sunburned compared to unprotected skin:

  • Organic (chemical) filters: Absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat. Examples include octocrylene, avobenzone, and octinoxate.
  • Mineral (physical) filters: Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide reflect and scatter UV radiation. They are especially suitable for sensitive skin and children.

Recommended SPF Levels

The appropriate SPF depends on skin type, UV intensity, and duration of sun exposure:

  • SPF 15-25: Low to moderate protection, suitable for darker skin types in moderate sunlight.
  • SPF 30-50: High protection, recommended for fair skin types and intense sun exposure.
  • SPF 50+: Very high protection, recommended for very fair skin, children, individuals with elevated skin cancer risk, and after medical procedures.

When Is Sun Protection Especially Important?

Sun protection should be practiced year-round, as UV radiation remains active even on cloudy days and during winter. It is particularly important in the following situations:

  • During summer and periods of intense sunlight
  • At high altitudes (e.g., skiing in the mountains)
  • Near reflective surfaces such as water, sand, or snow
  • When taking photosensitizing medications (e.g., certain antibiotics or diuretics)
  • For skin conditions such as lupus erythematosus or polymorphic light eruption

How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly

For effective protection, sunscreens must be applied correctly:

  • Apply generously and evenly to all exposed skin areas
  • Apply approximately 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure
  • Reapply every two hours and after swimming or heavy sweating
  • Do not forget sensitive areas such as the lips, ears, and nose

Sun Protection and Vitamin D

A frequently discussed aspect of sun protection is its impact on vitamin D synthesis in the skin. UV radiation is necessary for the body to produce vitamin D. However, studies show that a short daily period of sun exposure on uncovered skin is sufficient to meet vitamin D requirements without forgoing sun protection. In cases of confirmed vitamin D deficiency, supplementation may be advisable.

Medical Sun Protection

In a medical context, specialized sun protection products and treatment strategies exist for individuals with heightened photosensitivity. These include prescription-strength sunscreens with very high SPF, antihistamines for light-induced skin reactions, and UV-protective clothing certified to international standards. Individuals with pronounced photosensitivity should consult a dermatologist.
