Things worth knowing about "Taiji"

Taiji is a traditional Chinese movement art that combines gentle, flowing exercises with breathing techniques and meditation to promote overall health.

What is Taiji?

Taiji (also known as Taijiquan or, in Western countries, commonly referred to as Tai Chi) is an ancient Chinese movement art rooted in Taoist philosophy and Chinese martial arts. The term "Taiji" translates roughly as "the Supreme Ultimate" and describes the harmonious interplay of the opposing forces Yin and Yang. The practice consists of slow, flowing body movements combined with conscious breathing and focused mental attention.

History and Origins

Taiji evolved in China over many centuries and is traditionally attributed to the Taoist monk Zhang Sanfeng, said to have lived in the 13th to 14th centuries. Over time, several distinct styles emerged, named after the families that developed them:

  • Chen Style: The oldest known style, featuring alternating slow and explosive movements.
  • Yang Style: The most widely practiced style worldwide, characterized by uniformly slow, flowing movements.
  • Wu Style: Known for compact movements and a slight forward lean of the body.
  • Sun Style: Combines elements of Xingyi and Bagua with an upright posture and agile footwork.

Mechanism of Action and Core Principles

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Taiji promotes the free flow of Qi (vital energy) through the body's energy channels, known as meridians. From a Western medical perspective, the health benefits are explained by the following mechanisms:

  • Improvement of balance control through proprioceptive training
  • Strengthening of muscles, particularly the legs and core
  • Enhancement of joint mobility and coordination
  • Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system and reduction of stress hormones
  • Improvement of cardiovascular function through moderate aerobic exercise

Health Benefits

Numerous scientific studies have confirmed the positive health effects of Taiji. The most well-supported evidence-based benefits include:

Fall Prevention and Balance

Taiji is considered one of the most effective non-pharmacological interventions for fall prevention in older adults. Regular practice has been shown to improve balance, gait stability, and reaction time.

Cardiovascular Health

Regular Taiji practice can lower blood pressure, improve heart rate variability, and reduce overall cardiovascular risk.

Mental Health and Stress Reduction

The meditative component of Taiji supports stress reduction, alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improves overall quality of life.

Chronic Conditions

Taiji is used therapeutically for a range of chronic conditions, including:

  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Chronic back pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Practice and Application

Taiji can be started at any age and requires no special physical fitness or prior experience. A typical session lasts between 20 and 60 minutes. Practicing at least two to three times per week is recommended to achieve noticeable health benefits. Taiji can be practiced in group classes under the guidance of a qualified instructor or as an individual exercise. In many countries, Taiji is recognized as a preventive health measure and may be supported by health insurance providers.

Safety and Contraindications

Taiji is considered a very safe form of exercise with minimal risk of injury. However, individuals with certain conditions should consult a physician before beginning practice, including those with:

  • Severe joint or bone disorders
  • Acute injuries of the lower extremities
  • Advanced heart failure
  • Severe osteoporosis
