Taijiquan is a traditional Chinese movement art combining slow, flowing exercises with breathing techniques to promote health, balance, and mental well-being.
Taijiquan (also written as Tai Ji Quan or Tai-Ji-Quan) is an ancient Chinese movement art rooted in Daoist philosophy and traditional Chinese martial arts. The name combines Taiji (the principle of balance between Yin and Yang) and Quan (fist, referring to martial art). Today, Taijiquan is practiced worldwide primarily as a health-promoting movement therapy and is considered part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The movements of Taijiquan are flowing, slow, and deliberate, performed in combination with controlled breathing and focused mental awareness. The practice is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, as the exercises are gentle on the joints and easily adaptable.
The history of Taijiquan spans several centuries. Various school traditions have developed over time, including the Chen style, Yang style, Wu style, and Sun style. The Yang style is today the most widely practiced form worldwide, characterized by particularly soft and expansive movements. In 2020, Taijiquan was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to TCM, a vital life energy known as Qi flows through the human body. Taijiquan is believed to harmonize this energy flow and dissolve blockages. From a Western scientific perspective, Taijiquan exerts its effects through the following mechanisms:
Numerous scientific studies have documented positive effects of Taijiquan across various areas of health:
Particularly in older adults, regular Taijiquan practice has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of falling. This is attributed to improved balance, proprioception (awareness of body position), and leg strength.
Studies indicate that Taijiquan can lower blood pressure, stabilize heart rate, and improve overall cardiovascular function.
Taijiquan has been shown to reduce stress and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. The combination of movement, breath control, and mindfulness promotes general well-being.
Evidence suggests that Taijiquan can provide relief for chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia, arthritis, and osteoporosis. It is also used therapeutically in conditions such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
Taijiquan is typically learned in group or individual classes. A standard session includes:
The World Health Organization (WHO) explicitly recommends Taijiquan as part of an active and healthy lifestyle, particularly for older adults.
Taijiquan is considered a very safe form of exercise with an extremely low risk of injury. However, people with certain conditions should consult a doctor before beginning:
