Telomeres are the protective end pieces of chromosomes, consisting of repeating DNA sequences and a special protein coat. They prevent the chromosome ends from being recognised as DNA damage and degraded. The telomeres shorten with each cell division. If they reach a critical length, the cell can no longer divide and undergoes cell ageing (senescence) or programmed cell death (apoptosis).
Telomere shortening and cell ageing
The length of telomeres is considered a marker for biological ageing. Various factors contribute to the shortening of telomeres:
Natural cell division: With each cell replication, telomere length decreases.
Oxidative stress: Free radicals can accelerate telomere shortening.
Inflammation: Chronic inflammatory processes negatively affect telomere length.
Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy diet, stress, smoking and environmental toxins can accelerate telomere shortening.

Telomerase - The enzyme of longevity
