Things worth knowing about "Telomeres"

Telomeres are the protective caps of chromosomes and play a central role in cell ageing and longevity. Find out more about their function, shortening and ways to preserve them.

Telomeres are the protective end pieces of chromosomes, consisting of repeating DNA sequences and a special protein coat. They prevent the chromosome ends from being recognised as DNA damage and degraded. The telomeres shorten with each cell division. If they reach a critical length, the cell can no longer divide and undergoes cell ageing (senescence) or programmed cell death (apoptosis).

Telomere shortening and cell ageing

The length of telomeres is considered a marker for biological ageing. Various factors contribute to the shortening of telomeres:

  • Natural cell division: With each cell replication, telomere length decreases.

  • Oxidative stress: Free radicals can accelerate telomere shortening.

  • Inflammation: Chronic inflammatory processes negatively affect telomere length.

  • Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy diet, stress, smoking and environmental toxins can accelerate telomere shortening.

Telomere shortening has been linked to age-related diseases and a weakening of the immune system.

Telomerase - The enzyme of longevity

Telomerase is an enzyme that can lengthen telomeres again by adding new DNA sequences. In most somatic cells, telomerase is barely active, whereas it plays a central role in stem cells, germ cells and certain cancer cells. Increased telomerase activity could help to slow down the ageing process.

Possibilities for preserving telomere length

There are various strategies for preserving telomere length or slowing its shortening:

  • A diet rich in antioxidants: Eating fruits, vegetables and polyphenol-rich foods can reduce oxidative stress.

  • Regular exercise: Studies show a correlation between exercise and longer telomeres.

  • Stress reduction: Meditation and mindfulness techniques can have a positive effect on telomere stability.

  • Nutritional supplements: Substances such as resveratrol, NMN, astragalus extract and spermidine are being investigated for their potential effect on telomere maintenance.

Spermidine, a naturally occurring polyamine found in foods such as wheat germ, soya beans and mushrooms, shows promising effects on cell health. It activates autophagy processes, in which damaged cell components are recycled, and can help maintain telomere length by supporting cellular protection mechanisms and reducing oxidative stress.

Scientific studies

Research shows that people with longer telomeres tend to have a longer life expectancy. Long-term studies are currently investigating the extent to which telomerase activators and specific nutrients could play a role in anti-ageing.
