Things worth knowing about "Troxerutin"

Troxerutin is a plant-derived flavonoid that strengthens vein walls, reduces capillary permeability, and is used to treat venous disorders and oedema.

What is Troxerutin?

Troxerutin is a semi-synthetic flavonoid derived from rutin, a naturally occurring plant compound (bioflavonoid). It belongs to the group of hydroxyethylrutosides and is also known by its Latin name Troxerutinum. In medicine, troxerutin is valued primarily for its venoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Mechanism of Action

Troxerutin acts through several complementary mechanisms:

  • Vascular sealing: It reduces the increased permeability of small blood vessels (capillaries), thereby limiting the leakage of fluid into surrounding tissue.
  • Venous toning: It increases the tone of vein walls, supporting the return of blood to the heart.
  • Antioxidant effect: Troxerutin neutralises free radicals, protecting vascular walls from oxidative damage.
  • Anti-inflammatory effect: It inhibits the release of certain inflammatory mediators, helping to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Antithrombotic effect: Studies have described an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, potentially reducing the risk of clot formation.

Medical Indications

Troxerutin is primarily used for conditions and symptoms associated with the venous system:

  • Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI): Heaviness, fatigue, and aching in the legs, and leg cramps
  • Oedema: Fluid retention in the tissue, particularly in the legs and ankles
  • Haemorrhoids: To relieve inflammation, itching, and pain
  • Varicose veins: Supportive treatment for symptom relief
  • Post-traumatic oedema: Following injury or surgery

Forms and Dosage

Troxerutin is available in several formulations:

  • Tablets/Capsules: Typical oral doses range from 300 mg to 1200 mg per day, divided into multiple administrations.
  • Gels and creams: For topical application to treat local complaints such as tired legs or localised swelling.
  • Combination products: Often combined with other venoactive agents such as Ruscus extract or hesperidin.

The exact dosage should always be determined in consultation with a doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects

Troxerutin is generally considered well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal complaints (e.g. nausea, stomach pain)
  • Headache
  • Skin reactions with topical application (rare)
  • Allergic reactions (rare)

Contraindications and Interactions

Troxerutin should not be taken if there is a known hypersensitivity to the active substance or other flavonoids. Caution is advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and medical advice should be sought. Interactions with anticoagulant medications (e.g. warfarin) are possible and should be clarified with a physician.

Scientific Evidence

Several clinical studies confirm the effectiveness of troxerutin in chronic venous insufficiency and associated oedema. The substance is available as an approved medicinal product in various European countries. Compared to other venoactive drugs, troxerutin demonstrates good efficacy alongside a favourable safety profile.
