Tuina is a traditional Chinese massage therapy that uses targeted manual techniques to harmonize the flow of energy in the body, relieving pain and muscle tension.
Tuina (also written as Tui Na or Tui-na) is one of the oldest healing methods within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The name derives from the Chinese words tui (push, press) and na (grasp, knead), which describe the fundamental manual techniques of this therapy. Tuina has been practiced in China for more than 2,000 years and is considered one of the five pillars of TCM, alongside acupuncture, herbal medicine, Qigong, and dietetics.
Tuina is based on the concept of Qi, the vital life energy that flows through a network of channels known as meridians. In TCM theory, disrupted or blocked Qi flow is regarded as a root cause of pain and illness. Through targeted manual techniques applied to specific points and meridians, Tuina aims to regulate energy flow, resolve blockages, and activate the body's natural self-healing abilities.
From a Western medical perspective, the effects of Tuina are attributed in part to the following mechanisms:
Tuina is used for a wide range of complaints. The most common areas of application include:
A Tuina session typically begins with a detailed TCM-based consultation, during which the tongue, pulse, and individual complaints are assessed. The actual treatment is usually performed with the patient clothed, on a treatment table or chair. The therapist applies a variety of manual techniques, including:
A session typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. The recommended number of treatments depends on the individual assessment.
Scientific research into Tuina has grown in recent years. Several clinical trials and systematic reviews indicate positive effects for chronic back pain, neck pain, and knee osteoarthritis. However, the quality of existing studies is often limited, and further high-quality randomised controlled trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy. International organisations such as the WHO recognise Tuina as part of traditional medicine practice.
Tuina is considered safe when performed correctly by trained therapists. However, there are situations in which Tuina should not be used, or should be applied with caution:
Medical consultation is always recommended before starting Tuina therapy, especially in the presence of existing health conditions.
