A tumor board is an interdisciplinary medical conference in which specialists from multiple fields collaborate to determine the best treatment plan for cancer patients.
A tumor board (also called a multidisciplinary team meeting or MDT meeting) is a regularly scheduled conference in oncology where specialists from different medical disciplines meet to jointly develop the most appropriate treatment plan for patients diagnosed with cancer. The tumor board is widely recognized as the gold standard in oncological care and is an established feature of most certified cancer centers worldwide.
Depending on the type and stage of the cancer, different specialists participate in a tumor board. Typical members include:
Specialized tumor boards – for example for breast cancer, colorectal cancer, or lung cancer – may include additional relevant specialists.
During a tumor board meeting, individual patient cases are discussed in detail. All available medical information is gathered and evaluated, including:
Based on this information, the team develops a joint treatment recommendation that considers all relevant options: surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, or palliative care measures.
Cancer is a complex disease that often requires a combination of different treatment approaches. No single physician can optimally assess all aspects of cancer care alone. The tumor board ensures high-quality diagnosis and treatment planning through multiprofessional evaluation. Research shows that patients whose cases are discussed in a tumor board frequently achieve better treatment outcomes.
Key goals of the tumor board include:
Patients have the right to know whether their case has been discussed in a tumor board and what recommendations were made. Tumor board decisions are recommendations, not binding orders – the final treatment decision is always made together with the patient in a process known as shared decision making. Patients can also actively request that their case be presented at a tumor board meeting.
In many countries, presenting cancer patients at a tumor board is a key quality criterion for certified cancer centers. Leading oncology institutions – including university hospitals and comprehensive cancer centers – rely on tumor boards to ensure consistent, multidisciplinary care for every patient. Organizations such as the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) strongly advocate for regular tumor board discussions as part of high-quality cancer care.
