Turmeric is a yellow spice that is extracted from the root of the plant Curcuma longa . It belongs to the ginger family and is used both in the kitchen and in naturopathy.
The main active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, a powerful antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and possibly even anticarcinogenic properties. Curcumin is responsible for the intense colour of the root and plays a central role in the spice's health-promoting effects.
In naturopathy, turmeric is traditionally used to alleviate inflammation, toTurmeric can be taken in various ways. In the kitchen, it is used as a powder for curry dishes, soups or the popular ""golden milk"" used. It is also available as a dietary supplement in capsule, tablet or liquid form. The fresh root can also be used in smoothies, teas or dishes.
An important aspect when using curcumin is its bioavailability, i.e. the body's ability to absorb and utilise the active ingredient. Curcumin alone is poorly absorbed. However, studies show that taking it at the same time as piperine (a component of black pepper) or healthy fats can significantly improve absorption.
