Urolithin A is a bioactive compound produced in the human gut through the microbial conversion of dietary polyphenols – specifically ellagitannins and ellagic acid – found in foods such as pomegranates, walnuts, and certain berries. Chemically, it belongs to the family of urolithins, which are dibenzo[b,d]furan-2-ol derivatives.
Notably, the ability to produce Urolithin A varies significantly among individuals, as the conversion process depends on the unique composition of each person's gut microbiome. It is estimated that only about 30–40% of the population can produce meaningful amounts of this compound from dietary sources alone.

Clinical trials have demonstrated that Urolithin A supplementation can improve muscle function and muscle endurance. In older adults, improvements in walking speed and muscle strength have been observed, suggesting a potential role in preventing sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss).
As mitophagy declines with age, cellular renewal becomes impaired. Urolithin A can partially compensate for this decline, contributing to the maintenance of cellular health. In preclinical models, the compound slowed age-associated functional decline across multiple tissue types.
