UV radiation is part of sunlight and consists of invisible electromagnetic waves, which are divided into three categories: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C.
While UV-C rays are almost completely absorbed by the earth's atmosphere, UV-A and UV-B rays penetrate to the earth's surface and affect our skin and health.UV-A rays penetrate deep into the skin and promote the formation of free radicals. These lead to oxidative stress, which accelerates skin ageing. UV-B rays, on the other hand, penetrate less deeply into the skin, but are responsible for sunburn and DNA damage. In the long term, they can cause skin cancer. Although the sun is essential for the formation of vitamin D, excessive UV radiation can damage the skin, put a strain on the immune system and lead to chronic skin problems. Effective protection in the form of sunscreens or antioxidants is therefore essential.
One natural antioxidant is astaxanthin, which is obtained from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. It naturally protects the skin from UV damage and supports the cells by neutralising free radicals and thus preventing damage to the cell structure. Thanks to its antioxidant effect, astaxanthin protects the skin against loss of elasticity, promotes moisture retention and can therefore reduce the depth of wrinkles. It acts as a natural sunscreen from the inside, which does not replace the external application of sun creams, but supplements it. The anti-inflammatory properties of astaxanthin strengthen the body's defences and protect it from the effects of UV stress.
