Things worth knowing about "Vaccination status"

Vaccination status indicates which vaccines a person has received and whether their immunization is up to date. It is a key element of preventive medicine.

What is Vaccination Status?

Vaccination status describes the current state of a person's immunizations. It indicates which diseases a person has been vaccinated against, when the last vaccination was administered, and whether booster shots are needed. Vaccination status is typically documented in a vaccination record (also called an immunization card or vaccination booklet) and is an essential tool in public health prevention.

Importance of Vaccination Status

A complete and up-to-date vaccination status protects not only the vaccinated individual but also contributes to so-called herd immunity. When a sufficient proportion of a population is immune, the spread of infectious agents is slowed or prevented, which is especially critical for those who cannot be vaccinated themselves, such as newborns or immunocompromised individuals.

Recommended Vaccinations

Health authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and national bodies publish regular vaccination recommendations. Common recommended vaccinations include:

  • Childhood vaccines: Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), chickenpox, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, hepatitis B, Hib, meningococcal, pneumococcal
  • Adolescents and adults: Tetanus and diphtheria booster every 10 years, pertussis, annual influenza, COVID-19
  • High-risk groups: Pneumococcal and shingles (herpes zoster) vaccines for older adults, hepatitis A and B for certain occupational groups
  • Travel vaccines: Depending on destination, e.g., yellow fever, typhoid, rabies, Japanese encephalitis

How is Vaccination Status Checked?

Vaccination status can be verified in several ways:

  • Vaccination record/booklet: The primary document tracking all received vaccinations, including dates and lot numbers
  • Blood test (antibody titer): A blood test can determine whether sufficient antibodies against specific diseases are still present
  • Digital vaccination proof: Many countries now offer digital vaccination certificates, particularly for COVID-19, with broader digital systems under development

When Should Vaccination Status be Reviewed?

It is recommended to review vaccination status regularly – at least every 10 years – with a general practitioner or specialist. Key occasions for a review include:

  • Before international travel
  • During pregnancy (for protection of mother and child)
  • When starting a new job in healthcare or social services
  • After exposure to an infectious disease
  • As part of routine health check-ups

Incomplete or Missing Vaccination Protection

Individuals without complete vaccination coverage face an increased risk of contracting vaccine-preventable diseases. In most cases, missing vaccinations can be caught up on through a so-called catch-up vaccination schedule. Healthcare providers and public health services can advise on individualized immunization plans. Catch-up vaccinations are safe and beneficial at any age.
