Add as Preferred SourceVector control refers to measures that reduce or eliminate disease-transmitting organisms such as mosquitoes and ticks to prevent infectious diseases in humans.
Vector control encompasses all strategies and interventions aimed at reducing or eliminating organisms that transmit pathogens to humans. These organisms, known as vectors, include insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and sandflies, as well as rodents in some contexts. Diseases transmitted by vectors include malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus infection, leishmaniasis, and Lyme disease.
Vector control is a cornerstone of public health and global disease prevention. While it is especially critical in tropical and subtropical regions, its importance is growing in temperate zones as well, driven by the expansion of vector habitats due to climate change.
Vectors spread pathogens — including parasites, viruses, and bacteria — when they bite or feed on human hosts. Environmental conditions such as standing water, humidity, temperature, and proximity to human settlements strongly influence vector populations and thus the risk of disease transmission.
The use of insecticides is one of the most widely implemented approaches. Key strategies include:
Biological control uses natural predators or pathogens to reduce vector populations:
Modifying or eliminating breeding sites can sustainably reduce vector populations:
Cutting-edge approaches include:
On an individual level, important protective measures include:
A major challenge is the growing problem of insecticide resistance among vector populations, which reduces the effectiveness of chemical control methods. Many strategies also require consistent implementation at a population scale and adequate funding. Climate change is expanding the geographical range of many vectors, increasing the risk of disease transmission in previously unaffected areas.
The World Health Organization (WHO) published the Global Vector Control Response (GVCR) 2017–2030, which provides a framework for coordinated, sustainable vector control efforts across countries. The aim is to significantly reduce the global burden of vector-borne diseases through strengthened national programs and international collaboration.
