What is Verbascoside?
Verbascoside (also known as Verbascosid or Acteoside) is a secondary plant metabolite belonging to the class of phenylethanoid glycosides. These bioactive compounds occur in a wide range of medicinal plants and have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Verbascoside was first isolated from the mullein plant (Verbascum sinuatum), but is found in many other plant species as well.

Verbascoside has been identified in a large number of medicinal plants, including:
- Mullein (Verbascum spp.) – particularly rich in verbascoside
- Vervain (Verbena officinalis)
- Olive leaves (Olea europaea)
- Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens)

The concentration of verbascoside varies depending on the plant species, plant organ (leaves, flowers, roots), and harvest time.

Verbascoside exerts its biological effects through several molecular mechanisms:
Antioxidant Activity
Verbascoside is a potent antioxidant. It neutralizes free radicals and protects cells from oxidative stress – a mechanism associated with many chronic diseases, aging processes, and neurodegenerative conditions. Studies show that verbascoside possesses antioxidant activity comparable to or even exceeding that of well-known antioxidants such as vitamin C.
Anti-inflammatory Activity
Verbascoside inhibits pro-inflammatory enzymes and signaling pathways, particularly COX-2 activity (cyclooxygenase-2) and the production of nitric oxide (NO), as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and interleukin-6. This mechanism is comparable to that of some classical anti-inflammatory medications.
Antimicrobial Activity
Scientific studies confirm antibacterial and antiviral properties of verbascoside. It has demonstrated effectiveness against various gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain viruses.
Neuroprotective Effects
Verbascoside protects nerve cells from oxidative stress and toxic influences. Animal model studies have shown that verbascoside exhibits neuroprotective effects in models for Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, suggesting potential therapeutic applications in neurodegenerative conditions.
