Vitamin K ist ein fettlösliches Vitamin, das eine zentrale Rolle bei der Blutgerinnung, Knochengesundheit und Gefäßelastizität spielt.
Es existieren zwei Hauptformen von Vitamin K: Vitamin K1 (Phyllochinon), das vor allem in grünem Blattgemüse wie Spinat, Grünkohl oder Brokkoli vorkommt, und Vitamin K2 (Menachinon), das durch Darmbakterien gebildet oder über fermentierte Lebensmittel wie Natto, Sauerkraut oder Käse aufgenommen wird. Beide Formen sind essenziell, jedoch erfüllt K2 zusätzlich langfristige Schutzfunktionen für Herz und Knochen.
Vitamin K aktiviert bestimmte Gerinnungsfaktoren in der Leber, die notwendig sind, um Blutungen zu stoppen und Wundheilung zu ermöglichen. Darüber hinaus ist es an der Regulation des Kalziumstoffwechsels beteiligt: Es sorgt dafür, dass Kalzium in die Knochen eingebaut und nicht in den Gefäßen abgelagert wird. In Kombination mit Vitamin D3 und Magnesium trägt es zur Erhaltung stabiler Knochen und zur Prävention von Arterienverkalkung bei.

Besonders Neugeborene erhalten prophylaktisch Vitamin K, um Blutungen vorzubeugen.
