Mönchspfeffer (Vitex agnus-castus) ist eine traditionelle Heilpflanze aus dem Mittelmeerraum, die vor allem in der Frauenheilkunde eingesetzt wird.
Die getrockneten Früchte enthalten sekundäre Pflanzenstoffe, die auf das endokrine System wirken, insbesondere durch eine indirekte Beeinflussung des Prolaktinspiegels. Mönchspfeffer kann somit den weiblichen Hormonhaushalt regulieren und hormonell bedingte Beschwerden im Zyklus positiv beeinflussen.
Zu den häufigsten Einsatzbereichen zählen prämenstruelles Syndrom (PMS), Zyklusstörungen, spannungsbedingte Brustschmerzen sowie Wechseljahresbeschwerden. Mönchspfeffer kann die Reifung des Gelbkörpers (Corpus luteum) fördern und dadurch den Progesteronspiegel harmonisieren, was für eine gesunde zweite Zyklushälfte wichtig ist. Die Wirkung entfaltet sich langsam und eignet sich gut für eine pflanzliche Langzeitregulation.
Eingenommen wird Mönchspfeffer in Form von Tabletten, Tropfen oder Kapseln, oft als standardisierter Extrakt. Die Verträglichkeit gilt als gut, leichte Nebenwirkungen wie Magenbeschwerden oder Hautausschläge sind selten. Auch in der Begleitung von Absetzphasen hormoneller Verhütungsmittel (z. B. Pille) wird Mönchspfeffer zunehmend eingesetzt.
