The goal is to improve overall health, lower the risk of chronic diseases, and enhance quality of life.

Causes of Overweight

Excess body weight results from a prolonged imbalance between calorie intake and energy expenditure. Common contributing factors include:

  • Physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Hormonal disorders (e.g., hypothyroidism, Cushing syndrome)

Health Significance

Behavioral therapy and psychological counseling help individuals change unhealthy eating and activity patterns in the long term. Techniques such as self-monitoring, stress management, and motivational interviewing play an important role in successful weight management.

Pharmacological Treatment

In certain cases, medication may be a useful addition to lifestyle changes. Approved weight-loss medications (e.g., GLP-1 receptor agonists such as semaglutide) are typically prescribed only for obesity or overweight with comorbidities, and must be used under medical supervision.

Surgical Interventions

For severe obesity (BMI ≥ 40, or BMI ≥ 35 with serious comorbidities), bariatric surgery (e.g., gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy) may be considered when other treatments have been unsuccessful.

Recommendations and Goals

A realistic and health-promoting rate of weight loss is approximately 0.5–1 kg per week. Rapid weight loss through very low-calorie diets can lead to muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, and the so-called yo-yo effect (weight regain). Sustainable lifestyle changes are more effective in the long term than short-term diets.
