What is Whey Protein Concentrate?
Whey protein concentrate (WPC) is a dietary supplement derived from whey – the liquid byproduct of cheese or quark production. It is one of the most widely used protein sources in sports nutrition and general health. The protein content typically ranges between 70 and 80 percent, with the remainder consisting of carbohydrates (lactose), fats, and minerals.
Production and Composition
WPC is produced by filtering and drying liquid whey. Compared to whey protein isolate (WPI), the concentrate retains a slightly higher fat and lactose content, but is generally more affordable and equally nutritious.

Biological Functions and Mechanisms
Whey protein concentrate provides all essential amino acids that the human body cannot produce on its own. It is particularly rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) – leucine, isoleucine, and valine – which play a key role in muscle protein synthesis. It also contains bioactive peptides, lactoferrin, beta-lactoglobulin, and immunoglobulins, which may provide additional health benefits.
Applications
Sports and Muscle Building
In sports nutrition, whey protein concentrate is primarily used to support muscle growth and post-exercise recovery. Research shows that consuming whey protein shortly after training can significantly enhance muscle protein synthesis.
Weight Management
Due to its high satiety effect, whey protein concentrate is also used in calorie-controlled diets as part of a weight management strategy.
Clinical Nutrition
In clinical nutrition, whey protein is used for patients with increased protein requirements, such as after surgery, in cases of malnutrition, or in older adults who are at risk of sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss).
Recommended Intake and Dosage
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a daily protein intake of approximately 0.8 g per kilogram of body weight for adults. Athletes may require between 1.2 and 2.0 g per kg of body weight depending on the intensity of training. A typical serving of whey protein concentrate is 20–30 g of powder, providing approximately 15–25 g of protein.
Side Effects and Risks
Whey protein concentrate is generally considered safe for healthy adults. However, some individuals may experience:
- Digestive discomfort: Bloating, stomach cramps, or diarrhea, especially in individuals with lactose intolerance
- Allergic reactions: Not suitable for people with a cow milk protein allergy
- Kidney strain: Excessively high protein intake over prolonged periods may be problematic for individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions
Individuals with lactose intolerance should consider switching to whey protein isolate (WPI) or a lactose-free product, as WPC still contains notable amounts of lactose.
Interactions
Whey protein concentrate may affect the absorption of certain minerals such as zinc and iron when taken simultaneously. It is therefore advisable to stagger the intake of supplements. Drug interactions are uncommon at normal nutritional doses.
