On 25.09.2024 is Dental Health Day. This year, the focus is on pregnancy and dental health. The oral flora with its oral microbiome is an essential part of the innate immune system [1]. The human oral microbiome undergoes significant changes at different stages of life, including pregnancy.

Studies show that the total number of living microorganisms is higher in pregnant women, especially in the first trimester, than in non-pregnant women. A balanced oral microbiome plays a central role in a healthy pregnancy, as imbalances in its composition can lead to pregnancy complications. Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can increase susceptibility to oral diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. There is also increasing evidence of a link between the composition of the oral microbiome and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including premature birth, pre-eclampsia and low birth weight [2].

However, the oral microbiome also plays an important role in the general population, for example in the development of caries. Here, the use of lactoferrin was shown to be protective against the development of tooth decay [3]. Due to its antibacterial and inflammatory activity, lactoferrin can also play a protective role against tooth decay.protective role in other oral pathologies such as dry mouth, gingivitis and periodontitis. In contrast to antibiotics, which are often less effective against bacteria in biofilms or intracellular environments, the local application of lactoferrin has proven to be effective. Lactoferrin is simultaneously effective against microbial proliferation, biofilms, adhesion and invasiveness as well as inflammation in the oral cavity, making it a treatment option for oral pathologies without any side effects [4].

This is where the use of FLORAL with its unique composition of highly purified lactoferrin CLN® and specific lacticäure bacteria to enhance dental and oral care by promoting a healthy and balanced oral flora and preventing bacterial imbalance. One lozenge contains 50 mg lactoferrin and 500 million probiotic lactic acid bacteria. The lactoferrin it contains can act as a growth promoter for the ""good"" lactic acid bacteria and thus support the suppression of bad bacteria. As a result, the healthy balance of the oral flora is promoted, the mouth and teeth are cared for and protected against tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis.

In addition, a positive correlation between oral health and polyphenols has also been shown in vitro studies. Here, the oral intake of polyphenols was shown to be a promising natural therapy both for preventing microbial pathologies and for maintaining oral health [5]. In another in vitro study, the phenolic compounds in olive extract showed antibacterial, in some cases even bactericidal activity against various bacteria (e.g. A. actinomycetemcomitans or F. nucleatum). They also impaired the adhesion capacity and the bacterial cell surface structure of the bacteria [6]. In a pilot study conducted in 2023, an improvement in dental health was demonstrated by so-called ölziehen. One group of test subjects was given extra virgin olive oil as a mouthwash. After 30 days of use, an improvement in the reduction of bacterial plaque and gingivitis was observed. The exact mechanism of action behind this has not yet been fully clarified [7].

An extra virgin olive oil with a particularly high polyphenol content is PHENOLIO. For example, PHENOLIO could be a complementary means of supporting the skin;

PHENOLIO

is a complementary product to support the daily oral hygiene for the prophylaxis of the adhesion and formation of bacterial plaque.
