Enteroviruses are a group of RNA viruses that primarily infect the gastrointestinal tract.strong data-start="177" data-end="208">gastrointestinal tractbut can also infect other organs. They belong to the Picornaviridae family and are mainly transmitted via smear infection, contaminated food or water and droplet infection. Enteroviruses are highly resistant to environmental influences and can survive outside the body for a long time, which favours their rapid spread.
The best-known diseases caused by enteroviruses include hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), summer flu, viral meningitis, myocarditis, polio (polio) and rare neurological complications. Symptoms vary depending on the type of virus and can include fever, skin rashes, diarrhoea, sore throat, headache, muscle pain or neurological deficits. Enteroviruses can cause serious infections, particularly in immunocompromised people.
