Endometriosis is a chronic, often painful condition in which tissue that resembles the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterine cavity.
In endometriosis, endometrial tissue settles on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, peritoneum or intestines. Like the lining of the uterus, these centres are subject to monthly hormonal fluctuations, but bleed during menstruation without being able to drain. This can lead to inflammatory reactions, scars and adhesions and is one of the most common causes of unfulfilled desire to have children.
The symptoms are diverse and vary from person to person. Frequently occur severe menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea), pain during sexual intercourse, chronic lower abdominal pain, bladder or bowel problems and exhaustion . Many sufferers suffer for a long time before the diagnosis is made - on average it takes 7 to 10 years. The exact cause of endometriosis has not yet been conclusively clarified, but there are discussions about hormonal, genetic, immunological and inflammatory factors.
The treatment depends on the symptoms and the desire to have children.
