It is approved as a pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of Wilson's disease, a rare genetic disorder in which copper accumulates in organs. In this context, zinc acetate inhibits copper absorption in the intestine. It is also a common active ingredient in cold lozenges, as zinc ions can inhibit the replication of rhinoviruses.
Labeling and Regulation
In the EU, E650 is regulated under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 on food additives. It must be listed in the ingredients of food products either under its name zinc acetate or its additive code E650. In dietary supplements, it is commonly declared as a zinc source.
