Das Endothel ist eine hauchdünne Zellschicht, die das Innere aller Blutgefäße auskleidet.
Das Endothel spielt eine zentrale Rolle bei der Regulation des Blutdrucks, der Gefäßweite, des Gerinnungssystems und des Entzündungsgeschehens. Ein gesundes Endothel bildet Stickstoffmonoxid (NO) einen Botenstoff, der die Gefäße erweitert und so zur Gefäßelastizität und Durchblutung beiträgt.
Kommt es zu einer Endotheldysfunktion, z. B. durch oxidativen Stress, Bluthochdruck, Diabetes oder Entzündungen, kann dies zur Entstehung von Arteriosklerose führen. Erste Veränderungen sind bereits früh messbar, noch bevor klinische Symptome auftreten.
