The ketogenic diet is a special type of diet in which the intake of carbohydrates is drastically reduced while the proportion of fat is greatly increased;
The aim of the ketogenic diet is to put the metabolism into a state of ketosis, in which the body uses fat instead of glucose as its primary source of energy. In ketosis, the liver produces so-called ketone bodies from fats, which supply the brain and muscles with energy. This diet is becoming increasingly popular due to its many health benefits and its potential to help with various conditions.
The ketogenic diet is often used for weight loss as it promotes fat burning and regulates appetite. Studies show that it can stabilise blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity, which is particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance. In addition, this diet has been shown to be effective in the treatment of neurological diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as ketone bodies provide an efficient source of energy for the brain and can reduce inflammatory processes. The ketogenic diet also has an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, which can have a positive impact on chronic diseases such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.
Another benefit of the ketogenic diet is its potential effect on gut health. By avoiding sugar and starchy foods, harmful bacteria are deprived of their food source, which can promote the balance of intestinal flora. In combination with targeted intestinal cleansing, in which beneficial bacteria and anti-inflammatory substances such as lactoferrin play an important role, the health of the intestinal mucosa can also be improved. Lactoferrin is known for its immunomodulatory and antimicrobial properties, which can help to stabilise the intestinal barrier.
Despite the numerous benefits, switching to a ketogenic diet can bring challenges. Some people experience symptoms such as fatigue, headaches or irritability in the first few days, known as "keto flu". These side effects can usually be minimised by ensuring adequate fluid intake and supplementing electrolytes such as magnesium, sodium and potassium. It is important to plan the ketogenic diet well to avoid nutrient deficiencies and ensure a long-term balance.
The ketogenic diet offers multiple health benefits and can be used for both prevention and support for existing conditions. Its effect on metabolism, inflammation regulation and gut health makes it an effective tool in a holistic health concept. Before starting, however, it should be checked whether this diet is suitable for the individual, especially if there are existing health restrictions.
