Things worth knowing about "API"

APIs are active pharmaceutical ingredients with a targeted effect. Find out how bioactive substances such as lactoferrin and FMP are increasingly being used therapeutically.

API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients): Active ingredients at the centre of modern medicines

API, short for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient, refers to the pharmacologically active component of a medicinal product. While excipients such as fillers or binders are only used for shaping and stability, the API is the substance that develops the actual therapeutic effect - be it analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antihypertensive or antiviral. APIs are at the heart of modern drug development and are produced both synthetically and from natural sources such as plants, microorganisms or animal tissue.

The quality of an API is crucial for the effectiveness, safety and tolerability of a drug. This is why production, purification and documentation are subject to strict regulatory requirements, for example according to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) or by authorities such as the EMA and FDA. In addition to chemically defined APIs, biologically active molecules - such as peptides, monoclonal antibodies or enzymes - are also gaining in importance. In modern healthcare, classical APIs are increasingly merging with functional ingredients, particularly in the field of immune and gut health.

In this context, the use of so-called bioactive natural substances such as lactoferrin is increasing.lactoferrin, IGG, FMP or lactoperoxidase too. These substances do not act as classic APIs in the narrower regulatory sense, but show therapy-supporting effects, for example in inflammation, immune regulation or microbial imbalances. Some of these substances - such as lactoferrin - are now even being used as an API in clinical trials, for example to support viral infections, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases or skin diseases such as acne.

.

In the future, the boundary between ""classic API"" and ""functional active ingredient"" will become increasingly permeable. Precisely defined, naturally derived molecules with pharmacological effects - whether from milk, plants or fermentation - will increasingly find their way into clinically based products, particularly at the interface between pharmaceuticals, functional medicine and personalised nutrition.
