Things worth knowing about "Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane"

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is a chemical UV filter widely used in sunscreens to protect the skin against harmful UVA radiation.

What is Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane?

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (commonly known as Avobenzone, INCI: Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) is an organic UV filter used in sunscreens and sun-protective skincare products. It is one of the most widely used UVA filters globally and is approved for cosmetic use in the European Union, the United States, and many other countries.

Mechanism of Action

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane absorbs ultraviolet radiation in the UVA range, particularly between approximately 310 and 400 nanometers, with a peak absorption at around 357 nm. Upon absorbing UV energy, a photochemical process is triggered that converts the radiation into harmless heat before it can damage skin cells.

A well-known limitation of this ingredient is its photolability: under intense UV exposure, the molecule can degrade and lose its protective efficacy over time. To improve stability, modern sunscreen formulations often combine it with photostabilizers such as Octocrylene or specific silicone compounds.

Application and Occurrence

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is found in a wide range of cosmetic products, including:

  • Sunscreen creams, lotions, and sprays
  • Daily moisturizers with SPF protection
  • Makeup products with UV protection
  • After-sun care products

In the European Union, it is approved as a UV filter under EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, with a maximum permitted concentration of 5% in the finished product.

Safety and Potential Side Effects

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is considered largely safe when used as directed. However, some individuals may experience adverse reactions:

  • Contact allergies: A small proportion of users may develop allergic reactions such as redness, itching, or skin rash.
  • Photoallergic reactions: In rare cases, photoallergic contact dermatitis can occur in combination with sunlight exposure.
  • Hormonal effects: In vitro laboratory studies have identified weak estrogen-like properties. The clinical relevance of these findings for humans under cosmetic use conditions remains under scientific debate and has not been conclusively resolved.

Individuals with known hypersensitivity to chemical UV filters are advised to carefully review the ingredient lists of sunscreen products and may consider mineral-based UV filters (e.g., zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) as an alternative.

Importance for Sun Protection

Because UVA radiation penetrates deeply into the skin and contributes to premature skin aging and the development of skin cancer, effective UVA protection is essential. Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane is one of the few organic UV filters with a broad UVA absorption spectrum, making it a key ingredient in broad-spectrum sunscreens.
