Things worth knowing about "Cell Therapy"

Cell therapy is a medical procedure in which living cells are introduced into the body to treat diseases, repair tissue damage, or restore bodily functions.

What is Cell Therapy?

Cell therapy is an innovative medical approach in which living cells are deliberately introduced into a patient to treat disease, repair damaged tissue, or restore normal bodily functions. It is a cornerstone of modern regenerative medicine and is widely regarded as one of the most promising advances in 21st-century biomedicine. Depending on the origin of the cells used, therapies are classified as autologous (using the patient´s own cells) or allogeneic (using cells from a donor).

Types of Cell Therapy

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy utilizes undifferentiated stem cells that have the potential to develop into various specialized cell types. Stem cells can be harvested from bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, or peripheral blood. This approach is commonly used to treat blood disorders such as leukemia and lymphoma.

CAR-T Cell Therapy

CAR-T cell therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy) is a form of immunotherapy in which a patient´s T-cells are genetically engineered to recognize and destroy cancer cells. It has demonstrated remarkable results in certain blood cancers, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Dendritic Cell Therapy

Dendritic cell therapy involves preparing specialized immune cells called dendritic cells in such a way that they stimulate the immune system to target cancer cells. This approach remains an active area of oncological research.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess anti-inflammatory and tissue-regenerative properties. They are being investigated for use in inflammatory conditions, cartilage repair, and autoimmune diseases.

Fields of Application

Cell therapy is being applied or researched across a wide range of medical disciplines, including:

  • Oncology: Treatment of blood cancers and solid tumors
  • Hematology: Bone marrow transplantation for leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma
  • Cardiology: Research into regenerating heart muscle tissue after myocardial infarction
  • Neurology: Exploration of therapies for Parkinson disease, ALS, and spinal cord injuries
  • Orthopedics: Cartilage and bone regeneration
  • Autoimmune diseases: Immune modulation in conditions such as Crohn disease and multiple sclerosis

Procedure and Process

The exact procedure varies depending on the type of cell therapy. In general, the process involves the following steps:

  • Collection of cells (from the patient´s blood, bone marrow, or adipose tissue, or from a donor)
  • Laboratory processing, cultivation, and in some cases genetic modification of the cells
  • Quality control and safety testing
  • Administration of the cells to the patient, typically intravenously or directly into the affected tissue
  • Follow-up monitoring of treatment response and potential side effects

Benefits and Risks

Benefits

Cell therapy holds the potential to cure diseases that were previously difficult or impossible to treat. CAR-T cell therapies in particular have achieved durable remissions in certain cancers. In the field of regenerative medicine, cell-based approaches offer new possibilities for replacing or repairing damaged tissue.

Risks and Side Effects

Cell therapies can be associated with serious side effects, including:

  • Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS): An excessive immune reaction that can cause fever, low blood pressure, and organ damage
  • Neurological toxicity (particularly with CAR-T cell therapies)
  • Graft rejection when donor cells are used
  • Increased infection risk due to temporary immune suppression
  • Long-term risks such as secondary malignancies are still being studied

Approval and Regulation

In the European Union, cell therapy products are classified as Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and are subject to strict regulation by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Several CAR-T cell therapies have received official approval, while many other cell-based approaches are still being evaluated in clinical trials.

Outlook

Cell therapy is advancing at a rapid pace. Progress in gene engineering, synthetic biology, and artificial intelligence is opening new frontiers in personalized medicine. Researchers worldwide are working to make cell therapies safer, more effective, and accessible to a broader range of patients.
