Citricidal is the brand name of a grapefruit seed extract (GKE) obtained from the seeds, peel and membranes of grapefruit and marketed as a natural antimicrobial agent.
Citricidal is often used to treat bacterial, viral and fungal infections, to strengthen the immune system and for intestinal sanitation. In complementary medicine, it is considered a herbal alternative to antibiotics and is used orally, externally or for disinfection. The active ingredient complex it contains consists of bioflavonoids, ascorbic acid and various polyphenols, which are said to have a broad-spectrum effect against pathogenic microorganisms - including Candida albicans, E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and parasites. Users often report rapid relief from infections, particularly in the digestive tract, on the skin or in the mouth. Citricidal is also used as an additive in mouthwashes, nasal sprays or intimate care products.
However, the scientific data is not consistent. Some studies have found that the antibacterial effect of commercial grapefruit seed extracts is not solely due to natural ingredients, but possibly to chemical preservatives such as benzethonium chloride or triclosan, which were added during production. These findings have led to criticism and raise questions about the authenticity of the "natural" effect and the safety of prolonged use. This is why it is important to pay attention to independently tested quality and composition without synthetic additives when making your choice.
