Inflammation of the conjunctiva can be triggered by a variety of causes, including Viruses, bacteria, allergies or irritants like smoke or dust. Conjunctivitis is usually not serious, but can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as redness, itching, burning or tearing and is often contagious, especially if caused by viruses or bacteria. Bacterial or viral conjunctivitis can also cause purulent discharge, which causes the eyelid to stick together.
The treatment of conjunctivitis depends on the cause. Viral infections usually heal on their own, while bacterial infections are often treated with antibiotics. Antihistamines and special eye drops help with allergic causes. Irritation-related inflammation can be alleviated by avoiding the irritant and possibly with soothing eye drops.
As viral and bacterial conjunctivitis in particular are contagious, hygienic measures such as frequent hand washing and avoiding contact with the eyes should be observed to prevent the inflammation from spreading.
