Delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) is a short, naturally occurring neuropeptide consisting of nine amino acids (a nonapeptide) with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu. It was first isolated in the 1970s by Swiss researchers from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits in a state of delta sleep -- a deep sleep phase characterized by slow delta waves on the electroencephalogram (EEG). DSIP is detectable in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, and exerts a wide range of biological effects.

However, results in humans have been inconsistent, and DSIP is not considered a classical sedative or hypnotic agent.
DSIP exhibits pronounced anti-stress properties. It is thought to normalize physiological stress responses by dampening excessive cortisol release and regulating the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Several studies have demonstrated neuroprotective properties of DSIP, including reduction of oxidative stress and modulation of apoptotic pathways. It is being discussed as a potential protective factor in neurodegenerative diseases.
