Fibroblasts are the most abundant cells found in the connective tissue of the human body. They belong to the group of mesenchymal cells and are present in nearly every organ and tissue. Their primary role is to produce and maintain the extracellular matrix (ECM) – a complex network of proteins and sugar molecules that provides structural support and mechanical stability to surrounding cells.
Fibroblasts are spindle-shaped, highly versatile cells with a large, oval nucleus. In their resting state, they are referred to as fibrocytes. When activated by injury or inflammation, they resume their active fibroblast form and begin synthesizing matrix components. Fibroblasts are also capable of dividing and differentiating into other cell types – such as adipocytes or smooth muscle cells – making them key players in regenerative medicine.
During wound healing, fibroblasts go through several distinct phases. First, they migrate into the injured area, then they proliferate, and finally they produce large amounts of collagen to close the wound (remodeling phase). In later stages, fibroblasts can differentiate into myofibroblasts, which contribute to wound contraction and scar formation.
