Things worth knowing about "GHK-Cu"

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper peptide with regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in medicine and cosmetics for skin renewal, wound healing, and anti-aging treatments.

What is GHK-Cu?

GHK-Cu (Glycyl-L-Histidyl-L-Lysine-Copper) is a naturally occurring tripeptide bound to the trace element copper. It is found in human blood plasma, saliva, and urine, where it plays a central role in tissue repair and regeneration. As we age, the concentration of GHK-Cu in the body declines significantly, which is associated with diminished healing and renewal processes.

Mechanism of Action

GHK-Cu exerts its effects through several biological mechanisms:

  • Collagen synthesis: GHK-Cu stimulates the production of collagen types I, III, and IV, as well as elastin and glycosaminoglycans, which strengthen skin structure and reduce wrinkles.
  • Wound healing: The peptide promotes angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), migration of fibroblasts and keratinocytes, and production of growth factors.
  • Antioxidant activity: GHK-Cu neutralizes free radicals and protects cells from oxidative stress, in part by increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD).
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: The peptide modulates inflammatory signaling pathways, including inhibition of the transcription factor NF-kB, thereby reducing chronic inflammatory responses.
  • Gene regulation: Scientific studies show that GHK-Cu can influence the expression of more than 4,000 human genes, including those associated with tissue repair, immune function, and the suppression of tumor-related genes.

Medical and Cosmetic Applications

Skin Care and Anti-Aging

GHK-Cu is a well-established active ingredient in anti-aging cosmetics. Clinical studies confirm that topically applied GHK-Cu increases skin thickness, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin elasticity, and lightens hyperpigmentation. It is therefore used in serums, creams, and eye care products.

Wound Healing

In wound care medicine, GHK-Cu is used to accelerate the healing of chronic wounds, burns, and postoperative scars. The peptide improves the quality of newly formed tissue and reduces scar formation.

Hair Growth

GHK-Cu is also being researched and used for the treatment of hair loss (alopecia). It stimulates hair follicles, prolongs the growth phase of the hair (anagen phase), and can promote hair regrowth.

Peptide Therapy

In the field of regenerative medicine and peptide therapy, GHK-Cu is administered as a subcutaneous injection or infusion for systemic tissue regeneration, particularly in the context of anti-aging protocols and the treatment of degenerative conditions.

Dosage and Forms of Administration

GHK-Cu is available in various forms:

  • Topical: Serums and creams with a concentration of 1–5% GHK-Cu for daily skin application.
  • Subcutaneous/Injectable: In medically supervised therapies, dosages of typically 1–3 mg per application are used.
  • Oral: The oral bioavailability of GHK-Cu is limited, as the peptide can be broken down by digestive enzymes.

The exact dosage should always be determined individually and under medical supervision.

Safety and Side Effects

GHK-Cu is considered well-tolerated and safe. With topical application, skin irritation or redness may rarely occur. Injectable forms may cause local reactions at the injection site. Copper overload (copper toxicity) is not expected with proper use at therapeutic dosages; however, this should be considered in individuals with copper metabolism disorders (e.g., Wilson's disease). Medical consultation before use is recommended.
