Things worth knowing about "Glauber´s Salt"

Glauber's salt (sodium sulfate) is a well-known laxative and traditional remedy. It works osmotically in the intestine and is used in both conventional and naturopathic medicine.

What is Glauber's Salt?

Glauber's salt is the common name for sodium sulfate decahydrate (chemical formula: Na₂SO₄ · 10 H₂O). It was discovered in the 17th century by the German chemist and pharmacist Johann Rudolf Glauber, after whom it was named. The salt occurs naturally and can also be produced synthetically. It appears as a white, crystalline powder that dissolves readily in water.

Mechanism of Action

Glauber's salt acts as an osmotic laxative. In the intestine, sodium sulfate binds water, thereby increasing the volume of intestinal contents. This effect stimulates intestinal peristalsis (the natural movement of the bowel) and accelerates the transit of stool. The laxative effect typically sets in within 1 to 3 hours after ingestion.

Medical Uses

Classic Indications

  • Constipation: Glauber's salt has traditionally been used for the short-term treatment of constipation.
  • Bowel preparation before procedures: It is used to cleanse the bowel prior to colonoscopies or intestinal surgeries.
  • Poisoning: In certain cases of poisoning, Glauber's salt can be used to speed the elimination of toxic substances through the gastrointestinal tract.

Naturopathy and Traditional Medicine

In naturopathy and traditional medicine, Glauber's salt has a long history as a healing agent. It was historically used for a wide range of conditions, including liver and gallbladder disorders, rheumatic complaints, and general detoxification of the body. Today, these applications are only partially supported by clinical evidence.

Dosage and Usage Instructions

Glauber's salt is typically taken in powder form dissolved in a glass of water. The common adult dosage is 10 to 30 grams in sufficient liquid (at least 200 ml of water). It is important to drink adequate fluids during use to counteract fluid loss. Use should not continue for several days without medical advice.

Side Effects and Risks

  • Electrolyte loss: Frequent or excessive use can lead to a loss of important minerals (electrolytes) such as potassium and sodium.
  • Dehydration: The increased water loss through the intestine poses a risk of dehydration, particularly in elderly individuals and children.
  • Abdominal cramps and bloating: The osmotic effect may temporarily cause abdominal cramps, bloating, and nausea.
  • Laxative dependence: Long-term use of laxatives can lead to sluggish bowel function.

Contraindications

Glauber's salt should not be used in cases of:

  • Intestinal obstruction (ileus)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) during acute flare-ups
  • Severe abdominal pain of unknown origin
  • Heart failure or kidney failure
  • Infants and toddlers without medical supervision
  • Pregnancy without medical advice

Interactions

When taken alongside other medications, Glauber's salt may interfere with their absorption in the intestine, as the accelerated bowel transit reduces the time available for absorption. This can diminish the effectiveness of other drugs. It is therefore advisable to maintain a time gap of at least 2 hours between Glauber's salt and other medications.
