Things worth knowing about "Grippostad"

Grippostad is an over-the-counter combination medication used to relieve cold and flu symptoms such as fever, pain, and nasal congestion.

What is Grippostad?

Grippostad is a well-known over-the-counter combination medicine widely used in Germany and other German-speaking countries to treat the symptoms of colds and influenza (flu). It contains several active ingredients that work together to reduce fever, relieve pain, and ease nasal congestion. It is available without a prescription at pharmacies.

Active Ingredients and Mechanism of Action

Grippostad C typically contains the following active ingredients:

  • Paracetamol (500 mg): Acts as a pain reliever (analgesic) and fever reducer (antipyretic) by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system, thereby reducing the perception of pain and lowering body temperature.
  • Caffeine (25–30 mg): Enhances the pain-relieving effect of paracetamol and provides a mild stimulating effect.
  • Vitamin C (150–200 mg): Supports immune function and acts as an antioxidant. It may help reduce the duration or severity of cold symptoms.
  • Chlorphenamine (2 mg): A first-generation antihistamine that helps relieve runny nose, watery eyes, and other allergy-like cold symptoms. It may cause mild drowsiness.

Indications

Grippostad is indicated for:

  • Cold symptoms including runny nose, sore throat, and headache
  • Flu-like infections with fever and body aches
  • General feelings of illness associated with upper respiratory tract infections

Dosage and Administration

For adults and adolescents aged 16 and over, the standard dosage is:

  • 1–2 capsules or tablets up to 4 times daily
  • Take with a sufficient amount of water
  • Do not exceed the maximum daily dose (especially for paracetamol: maximum 4 g per day)
  • Do not use for more than 3–5 days without medical advice

Important: Grippostad is not suitable for children under 12 years of age. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a doctor before use.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Grippostad can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Drowsiness or sedation (due to chlorphenamine)
  • Dry mouth
  • Mild gastrointestinal discomfort

Rare but serious side effects include liver damage in the event of paracetamol overdose and allergic reactions. If severe symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately.

Contraindications and Interactions

Grippostad should not be taken in cases of:

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients
  • Severe liver or kidney impairment
  • Concurrent use of other paracetamol-containing products (risk of overdose)
  • Concurrent use of alcohol
  • Narrow-angle glaucoma or urinary retention

Relevant drug interactions include anticoagulants such as warfarin, other analgesics, and medications that affect the central nervous system.

When to See a Doctor

Medical advice should be sought if fever exceeds 39 degrees Celsius, symptoms persist for more than 5 days, severe sore throat or difficulty breathing occurs, or if symptoms worsen despite treatment.
