Jivamukti Yoga is a modern, holistic yoga style founded in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Life in New York City. The name derives from Sanskrit: Jiva means “individual soul” and Mukti means “liberation”. Together, Jivamukti Yoga embodies the idea of spiritual liberation through an active, physically engaging yoga practice.
Unlike purely fitness-oriented yoga styles, Jivamukti Yoga places strong emphasis on the integration of philosophical teachings, Sanskrit chanting (Kirtan), meditation, music, and ethical values such as compassion, non-violence (Ahimsa), and veganism.
Jivamukti Yoga is built upon five foundational tenets that shape every class:
A typical Jivamukti Yoga class is dynamic and challenging. It combines elements of Vinyasa Yoga (fluid movement sequences synchronized with breath) with spiritual and philosophical components. Classes often begin with the chanting of mantras or recitation of Sanskrit texts, followed by a creative sequence of asanas (postures) aligned with a monthly spiritual theme.
Each class typically ends with Savasana (corpse pose) and a brief meditation, allowing practitioners to integrate the experience and find stillness.
Regular practice of Jivamukti Yoga may contribute to a range of physical and mental health benefits:
Jivamukti Yoga is generally suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, with the physical intensity varying by class format. Specific formats include Open Class (all levels) and Spiritual Warrior (a 90-minute format for more experienced students). Individuals with orthopedic conditions or injuries should consult a physician or qualified yoga teacher before starting.
A defining characteristic of Jivamukti Yoga is its strong commitment to ethical and social values. The founders emphasize the connection between personal yoga practice and broader societal responsibility. Topics such as environmental awareness, animal rights, and social justice are integral to its teaching philosophy.
