Nursing to sleep refers to the practice of breastfeeding a baby or toddler until it falls asleep at the breast. The child drinks breast milk and drifts off during or shortly after feeding. This approach is biologically deeply rooted and for many infants represents a natural pathway to relaxation and rest.
Breast milk contains sleep-promoting substances such as tryptophan, an amino acid that serves as a precursor to the sleep hormone melatonin. In addition, suckling at the breast has a calming effect on the infant's nervous system. Physical closeness and sucking activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and sleep onset.
Although nursing to sleep is very helpful in the first months of life, it can over time lead to the child associating the breast as the only way to fall asleep. When the child wakes up at night – which is physiologically normal – it may struggle to fall back asleep without nursing. Experts refer to this as a sleep association.
From a dental health perspective, once the first teeth appear, it is advisable to be mindful of frequent nursing to sleep. Breast milk contains natural sugar (lactose), which in prolonged contact with teeth could theoretically contribute to tooth decay, though the scientific evidence on this is not entirely conclusive. Many dentists recommend cleaning the baby's teeth after night feeds or at least offering water afterwards.
Parents who wish to reduce nursing to sleep can gradually introduce alternative bedtime routines. A gentle, needs-oriented approach is key.
If nursing to sleep becomes a significant burden for the mother or child – for example, due to extreme sleep deprivation, persistent exhaustion, or breastfeeding difficulties – it is advisable to consult a certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), a pediatrician, or an infant sleep specialist. Professional support can offer individually tailored strategies.
