What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists and is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Semaglutide mimics the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which stimulates insulin secretion and lowers blood sugar levels. Due to its appetite-suppressing properties, Ozempic is also widely discussed in the context of weight management.
Common Side Effects
Most side effects of Ozempic affect the gastrointestinal tract and are most likely to occur at the beginning of treatment. They often diminish as the body adjusts to the medication.
- Nausea (very common)
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain
- Belching and flatulence
- Decreased appetite
Occasional and Rare Side Effects
In addition to gastrointestinal complaints, other side effects may occasionally occur:
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when used in combination with other antidiabetic drugs such as insulin or sulfonylureas
- Fatigue and dizziness
- Injection site reactions (redness, itching, swelling)
- Increased heart rate (tachycardia)

Serious Side Effects
In rare cases, Ozempic can cause serious adverse effects that require immediate medical attention:
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas): Severe, persistent abdominal pain radiating to the back may indicate pancreatitis. Treatment must be discontinued immediately if this occurs.
- Diabetic retinopathy: In patients with pre-existing retinopathy, semaglutide may in rare cases worsen vision.
- Acute kidney injury: Persistent gastrointestinal side effects can lead to dehydration and, subsequently, to impaired kidney function.
- Allergic reactions: Rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat may be signs of a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
Thyroid Tumors – Note from Animal Studies
In animal studies (rodents), GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with an increased risk of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Whether this risk applies to humans has not yet been fully established. Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or the rare MEN-2 syndrome should not use Ozempic.

Seek medical help promptly if any of the following occur:
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain
- Signs of severe low blood sugar (trembling, confusion, loss of consciousness)
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction (swelling, difficulty breathing)
- Changes in vision or worsening eyesight
- Significantly reduced urine output as a sign of kidney dysfunction
