Things worth knowing about "Phenylalanine"

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that is important for the synthesis of neurotransmitters and the support of mood and cognitive function.

Phenylalanine is an important building block of proteins and the starting material for numerous bioactive molecules. Its role as a precursor for tyrosine, from which important neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine and adrenaline as well as the skin pigment melanin are formed, is particularly well known. Phenylalanine is therefore directly involved in the regulation of mood, motivation, stress response and cognitive functions.

In the diet, phenylalanine is mainly found in protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, pulses, nuts and wholegrain cereals. It is also used as a component of the sweetener aspartame, which is why products containing aspartame must be explicitly labelled for people with phenylketonuria (PKU). In this hereditary metabolic disorder, phenylalanine cannot be broken down sufficiently, which can lead to toxic accumulations and severe mental developmental disorders - affected individuals must follow a low-phenylalanine diet.

In medicine and sports nutrition, phenylalanine is also occasionally used as an ergogenic substance - for example to increase mental performance, concentration and mood, especially in its L-form or as DL-phenylalanine (a combination of natural and synthetic form). Studies show that it can stimulate the production of neurotransmitters, which has the potential to boost mood and drive.

Important properties of phenylalanine:

  • Essential amino acid, precursor of tyrosine, dopamine, noradrenaline, melanin
  • Occurs in animal and plant proteins, also in aspartame
  • Important for brain function, stress regulation and mood
  • Must be strictly avoided in phenylketonuria
  • Used in performance enhancement and neurocognitive support
