Things worth knowing about "Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid"

Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid is a chemical UV filter used in sunscreens and skincare products to protect the skin from harmful UV-B radiation.

What is Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid?

Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid (INCI name: Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid; active ingredient name: Ensulizol) is a water-soluble, organic UV filter widely used in sunscreens, daily moisturizers, and other personal care products. It is one of the most commonly used chemical UV filters in cosmetic formulations worldwide.

Mechanism of Action

Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid effectively absorbs UV-B radiation in the wavelength range of approximately 290 to 320 nanometers. The molecule captures this high-energy radiation and converts it into harmless thermal energy before it can penetrate and damage skin cells. This protects the skin from sunburn and reduces the risk of UV-induced skin damage.

It is important to note that phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid provides protection only against UV-B radiation and does not filter UV-A rays. For broad-spectrum sun protection, it is typically combined with additional UV-A filters in cosmetic formulations.

Applications and Uses

This active ingredient is found in a wide variety of products, including:

  • Sunscreens (creams, lotions, sprays)
  • Daily moisturizers with SPF
  • Makeup products with UV protection
  • After-sun care products

Because of its water solubility, phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid is particularly well-suited for lightweight, non-greasy formulations. It helps create sunscreens with a pleasant skin feel, which may improve consumer compliance and regular use.

Regulatory Status and Safety

In the European Union, phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid is listed as an approved UV filter under Annex VI of EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The maximum permitted concentration in cosmetic products is 8% (as the acid). In the United States, it is approved by the FDA for use in sunscreen products.

The substance is generally considered well-tolerated when used as directed. In rare cases, allergic reactions or contact dermatitis may occur. Individuals with sensitive skin are advised to perform a patch test before regular use.

Environmental and Health Considerations

In recent years, there has been growing debate about whether chemical UV filters such as phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Studies conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) demonstrated that certain chemical UV filters are detectable in the blood at low concentrations after topical application. However, the clinical significance of these findings has not yet been fully established.

From an environmental perspective, researchers are also investigating whether UV filters released into water bodies may affect aquatic ecosystems. Phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid is generally considered less ecologically problematic than some other chemical UV filters, though studies have noted that it can form photodegradation products under UV light exposure, the long-term environmental impact of which requires further investigation.
