Things worth knowing about "Tetanus (lockjaw)"

Tetanus is a serious bacterial infectious disease caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. This bacterium is found in many environments, especially in soil, dust and animal faeces. Tetanus occurs when the bacterium enters the body through a wound and releases toxins that attack the nervous system. People who have not been vaccinated against tetanus or for whom the vaccination has not provided sufficient protection are particularly at risk.

The incubation period, i.e. the time between the infection and the onset of symptoms, can vary depending on the severity of the wound and the entry of the pathogen, but is usually between 3 and 21 days. The typical first signs of tetanus include muscle stiffness and pain, especially in the jaw and neck area, which is known as lockjaw (trismus). In advanced cases, the symptoms spread to other muscles, which can lead to severe muscle spasms, often occurring in the back or abdominal muscles. These spasms can be so severe that they can lead to breathing problems and can be fatal without treatment.

Treatment for tetanus consists of administering tetanus immunoglobulin, which neutralises the toxins, and antibiotic therapy to fight the bacteria. As the symptoms of tetanus can lead to serious complications, treatment often takes place in hospital, where intensive medical care may also be required. Tetanus can be prevented by immunisation in childhood and regular booster vaccinations, especially for adults every 10 years. Vaccination provides reliable protection against the disease and is the most important preventive measure.
