Things worth knowing about "Thrush (candidiasis)"

Thrush is a fungal infection caused by yeasts of the genus Candida, in particular Candida albicans.

Candida fungi are normally part of the body's natural flora in small quantities and are often found in the mouth, throat, gastrointestinal tract and on the skin. However, if the balance of microorganisms is disturbed, Candida can multiply excessively and cause an infection. Thrush is also known as Candida infection and can occur in various parts of the body; the most common form is oral thrush (oral candidiasis).

The symptoms depend on the area of the body affected. With oral thrush, white, creamy coatings form on the tongue, the inside of the cheeks, the palate and the throat, which can be scraped off when touched or with a spoon. In some cases, redness, pain and difficulty swallowing may also occur. Vaginal thrush mainly occurs in women and is characterised by itching, burning, redness and thick, white discharge from the vagina. In men, there may be reddening and swelling of the glans with itching and burning

.

Mouth thrush often occurs in people with weakened immune systems, e.g. HIV-infected people, diabetics or after prolonged antibiotic therapy that impairs the natural bacterial flora. Oral thrush often occurs in infants whose immune system is not yet fully developed and who are therefore more susceptible to infections. Other risk factors are poor oral hygiene, smoking or hormonal changes (e.g. during pregnancy).

For treatment, antifungal medication is often used.Probiotic preparations to support the natural microflora are also recommended to prevent the fungus from growing again. To prevent thrush, it is important to maintain the natural balance of microorganisms in the body (microbiome). A balanced diet, the conscious use of probiotics, stress reduction, regular exercise and sufficient fluid intake can help to stabilise the microbiome and keep the microorganisms in the body in balance.
