Thymosin refers to a group of peptide hormones primarily produced by the thymus gland, a small organ located behind the breastbone. The thymus is most active during childhood and adolescence and is essential for the development of a functional immune system. Thymosin peptides were first isolated in the 1960s and are broadly divided into two major subgroups: Thymosin Alpha (notably Thymosin α1) and Thymosin Beta (notably Thymosin β4).

It is administered as a subcutaneous injection.
