What is Tianeurax?

Tianeurax is a prescription-only medication containing the active substance tianeptine. It belongs to the class of antidepressants and is primarily used to treat depressive episodes. Tianeurax is available in different strengths and is typically administered in tablet form.

Indications

Tianeurax is indicated for the following conditions:

Depressive episodes (mild to severe depression)
Anxiety disorders associated with depressive symptoms
Somatic complaints accompanying depression (e.g., physical pain, fatigue)

Mechanism of Action

Tianeptine, the active ingredient in Tianeurax, has a unique mechanism of action that distinguishes it from conventional antidepressants. Unlike selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tianeptine enhances the reuptake of serotonin into presynaptic neurons rather than inhibiting it. In addition, it modulates glutamate receptors (particularly AMPA and NMDA receptors) and exerts neuroprotective and neuroplastic effects. These properties contribute to mood improvement and the reduction of anxiety symptoms.

Dosage

The standard dosage of Tianeurax depends on the severity of the condition and the individual response of the patient. Typical dosing is:

12.5 mg three times daily (standard adult dose)
Reduced doses may be required in elderly patients or those with liver impairment
Tablets should be taken before meals

The exact dosage is always determined individually by the treating physician. Patients should never change their dose without medical advice.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Tianeurax can cause side effects. Common side effects include:

Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
Dizziness and headache
Sleep disturbances (insomnia or drowsiness)
Dry mouth
Constipation

Rare but possible side effects include changes in liver enzyme levels and cardiac arrhythmias. Patients should inform their doctor immediately if unusual symptoms occur.

Contraindications and Interactions

Tianeurax must not be taken in the following situations:

Known hypersensitivity to tianeptine or any of the excipients
Concomitant use of MAO inhibitors (e.g., tranylcypromine) – a minimum interval of 14 days must be observed
Pregnancy and breastfeeding (only after a strict benefit-risk assessment)

Important interactions exist with other centrally acting substances, alcohol, and medications that affect serotonin levels (risk of serotonin syndrome).

Abuse Potential and Dependence

Tianeptine carries a certain risk of misuse and physical dependence, particularly at doses exceeding the recommended therapeutic range. In some countries, it has been misused outside of its therapeutic context. Treatment should therefore always be carried out under medical supervision, and discontinuation should not occur abruptly in order to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
