Things worth knowing about "Tick bite vaccination"

The tick bite vaccination protects against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a viral disease transmitted by tick bites. It is recommended for people living in or traveling to risk areas.

What is the Tick Bite Vaccination?

The tick bite vaccination, commonly referred to as the TBE vaccine (Tick-Borne Encephalitis vaccine), is a protective immunization against a viral disease transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an inflammation of the brain and meninges caused by the TBE virus. The vaccination is the most effective measure available to prevent this potentially life-threatening condition.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The TBE vaccination is recommended for individuals who live in or travel to TBE-endemic areas and spend time outdoors in nature. Risk areas are found across Central and Eastern Europe, including parts of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Baltic states, and Scandinavia. Vaccination is particularly recommended for:

  • Residents of endemic regions who work or engage in leisure activities outdoors
  • Hikers, campers, and forestry workers
  • Travelers visiting TBE-endemic regions in Europe and Asia
  • Children and adults from the age of 1 year in risk areas

How Does the Vaccine Work?

The TBE vaccine contains inactivated (killed) TBE viruses. After administration, the immune system produces specific antibodies against the virus without causing an actual infection. If a vaccinated person is later exposed to the TBE virus through a tick bite, the immune system can quickly recognize and neutralize the pathogen, preventing severe disease.

Vaccination Schedule and Dosage

The primary immunization against TBE consists of three doses:

  • 1st dose: at the chosen start date
  • 2nd dose: 1 to 3 months after the first dose
  • 3rd dose: 5 to 12 months after the second dose

A rapid immunization schedule is available, in which the second dose is given as early as 14 days after the first, providing faster protection. After the primary series, regular booster doses are required, typically every 3 to 5 years depending on the age of the vaccinated person.

Side Effects of the Tick Bite Vaccination

The TBE vaccine is generally well tolerated. Common side effects are mild and temporary:

  • Redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site
  • Fatigue and general malaise
  • Mild fever
  • Headache or muscle aches

Serious side effects are very rare. If you have a known allergy to any component of the vaccine, consult a healthcare professional before vaccination.

No Protection Against Lyme Disease

It is important to note that the TBE vaccine does not protect against Lyme disease, another tick-transmitted illness caused by bacteria (Borrelia). There is currently no approved vaccine for Lyme disease in Europe. The best protection against all tick-borne diseases remains preventing tick bites through appropriate clothing, insect repellents, and thorough body checks after outdoor activities.
