Things worth knowing about "Tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils)"

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, often caused by a bacterial or viral infection.

The tonsils are lymphatic organs in the throat that play a central role in the immune system by warding off pathogens and actively supporting the immune system. Tonsillitis is particularly common in children and adolescents, but can also affect adults.

Tonsillitis can be caused by various pathogens, with streptococci (especially Streptococcus pyogenes) being one of the most common bacterial causes. Tonsillitis can also be caused by viral infections, such as those that occur with colds or flu. The most common symptoms are sore throat, difficulty swallowing, redness and swelling of the tonsils.swelling of the tonsils, fever, headache and aching limbs and drowsiness. In the case of bacterial tonsillitis, white plaque may also be visible on the tonsils.

The treatment of tonsillitis depends on the cause of the infection. In the case of bacterial tonsillitis, antibiotic therapy with penicillin or other antibiotics is often prescribed to fight the infection and prevent complications. Antibiotic treatment is not effective in the case of a viral infection, which is usually treated symptomatically, e.g. with painkillers, antipyretics and sufficient fluid intake. In severe or chronically recurrent cases, surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) may be considered.

In order to prevent tonsillitis, good hygiene is important, especially regular hand washing and avoiding contact with people who are ill. In addition, strengthening the immune system through a balanced diet and regular exercise can be helpful. A balanced diet and sufficient fluid intake strengthen the immune system and help to ward off infections. Foods rich in vitamin C, zinc and other immune stimulants support the body in its fight against pathogens. Regular exercise in the fresh air also contributes to general health and promotes a strong immune system.

At the first signs of tonsillitis, it is important to seek treatment early on and get plenty of rest. If the symptoms do not disappear within a few days or if they worsen, a doctor should be consulted to find the right treatment and prevent possible complications.
