Things worth knowing about "Triple Bond"

A triple bond is a chemical bond between two atoms in which three pairs of electrons are shared. It is most common in organic and inorganic chemistry.

What Is a Triple Bond?

A triple bond is a type of covalent chemical bond in which two atoms share a total of six electrons – that is, three pairs of electrons. It is the strongest and shortest of all covalent bond types and is found frequently in both organic and inorganic chemistry.

Compared to a single bond (one shared electron pair) and a double bond (two shared electron pairs), a triple bond contains significantly more energy and is considerably harder to break.

Structure and Composition

A triple bond consists of:

  • One sigma bond (σ): The strongest component, formed by direct overlap of electron orbitals along the bond axis.
  • Two pi bonds (π): Formed by the lateral overlap of p-orbitals above and below the bond axis.

Because of this structure, the two atoms involved in a triple bond are held in a rigid, linear arrangement – rotation around the bond axis is not possible.

Occurrence and Examples

In Organic Chemistry

Triple bonds between two carbon atoms (C≡C) are the defining feature of alkynes. The simplest alkyne is acetylene (ethyne, C₂H₂), which is widely used in welding and as a key chemical building block in industry.

In Inorganic Chemistry

The most well-known example of an inorganic triple bond is found in molecular nitrogen (N₂). The nitrogen triple bond (N≡N) is exceptionally strong, making nitrogen gas chemically very inert under normal conditions. Other notable examples include carbon monoxide (C≡O) and cyanide ions (C≡N).

Relevance in Medicine and Biochemistry

Triple bonds play an important role in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology:

  • Drug development: Many active pharmaceutical ingredients contain triple bonds as reactive functional groups. Alkynes are deliberately incorporated into drug molecules because they can react selectively with biological target molecules such as enzymes.
  • Covalent inhibitors: Certain drugs that bind irreversibly to their target proteins use reactive triple bonds as part of their chemical structure.
  • Bioorthogonal chemistry: In biomedical research, triple bonds – for example, in the form of cyclooctyne derivatives – are used in so-called click chemistry reactions to label biomolecules inside living cells without the need for toxic metal catalysts.

Physical and Chemical Properties

  • Bond length: Triple bonds are shorter than double or single bonds. The C≡C bond has a length of approximately 120 pm (picometres).
  • Bond energy: Triple bonds are highly energetic. The C≡C bond has a bond energy of approximately 835 kJ/mol.
  • Reactivity: Despite their high bond energy, triple bonds are chemically reactive and can undergo addition and cycloaddition reactions.
