Things worth knowing about "Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine"

Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine is a synthetic UV filter used in sunscreens and cosmetics to protect the skin from harmful UV-A and UV-B radiation.

What is Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine?

Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine (chemical name: 2,4,6-Tris-[1,1-Biphenyl]-4-yl-1,3,5-Triazine) is a synthetic organic UV filter primarily used in sunscreens, daily moisturizers, and other cosmetic products. It belongs to the class of triazine-based UV absorbers and is recognized for its high photostability and broad-spectrum UV absorption.

Mechanism of Action

Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine absorbs high-energy ultraviolet radiation across both the UV-B range (280–315 nm) and the UV-A range (315–400 nm). The absorbed photons are converted into harmless thermal energy before they can reach skin cells and cause DNA damage or oxidative stress. The molecular structure of the triazine ring provides the filter with exceptional stability under UV exposure, resulting in minimal degradation compared to many other organic UV filters.

Use in Sunscreen Products

Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine is approved as a UV filter in cosmetic products within the European Union. It is commonly combined with other UV filters to ensure comprehensive, broad-spectrum protection against the full UV spectrum. Typical product types containing this ingredient include:

  • Sunscreen creams and lotions
  • Sunscreen sprays
  • Daily and facial creams with sun protection factor (SPF)
  • After-sun products

Concentration and Regulatory Status

According to EU cosmetics regulations (Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, Annex VI), Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine is approved as a UV filter with a maximum permitted concentration of 5% in finished products. These limits are established to ensure both the efficacy and consumer safety of the ingredient.

Safety and Skin Compatibility

Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine is considered well tolerated by the skin and has been assessed as safe by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) when used as directed at approved concentrations. It exhibits low skin penetration and therefore has minimal systemic absorption potential. Sensitization reactions are rare but may occasionally occur in individuals with sensitive skin.

Photostability and Advantages Over Other UV Filters

A key advantage of Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine is its high photostability. Many organic UV filters degrade rapidly under UV radiation and lose their effectiveness over time. Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine, by contrast, remains stable over extended periods and also helps to stabilize other UV filters within a formulation. This makes it a valuable component in modern broad-spectrum sunscreen products.

Environmental and Toxicological Considerations

As with many UV filters, the potential environmental impact of Tris-Biphenyl-Triazine on aquatic ecosystems is a subject of ongoing discussion. Current studies suggest that the substance exhibits low acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Nevertheless, environmental organizations recommend using reef-safe and environmentally friendly sunscreens when swimming in natural bodies of water.
