What Is Anti-inflammatory Action?
Anti-inflammatory action refers to all measures, substances, or mechanisms that weaken, control, or suppress an inflammatory response in the human body. Inflammation is fundamentally an important protective response of the immune system – it helps the body fight pathogens and repair tissue damage. However, when inflammation becomes chronic or excessive, it can itself become the cause of disease.
Acute vs. Chronic Inflammation
It is important to distinguish between two forms of inflammation:
- Acute inflammation: A short-term, protective immune response to injuries, infections, or foreign bodies. It is generally beneficial and self-limiting.
- Chronic inflammation: A persistently activated, low-grade inflammatory response associated with numerous diseases, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, rheumatism, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and even certain cancers.
Anti-inflammatory approaches primarily aim to regulate chronic or excessive inflammatory processes without permanently impairing the protective functions of the immune system.
Mechanisms of Anti-inflammatory Action
Anti-inflammatory measures intervene at various levels of the inflammatory process:
- Inhibition of inflammatory mediators: Substances such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, interleukins, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) are blocked or their production is reduced.
- Enzyme inhibition: Enzymes such as cyclooxygenase (COX-1, COX-2) and lipoxygenases play a key role in the formation of inflammatory mediators. Inhibiting them reduces the inflammatory response.
- Immune system regulation: Certain agents dampen the activity of immune cells such as macrophages, T-lymphocytes, or neutrophil granulocytes.
- Antioxidant effects: Oxidative stress promotes inflammatory processes. Antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, or polyphenols can indirectly inhibit inflammation.

- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): e.g., ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen – inhibit COX enzymes and reduce pain, fever, and inflammation.

- Biologics: e.g., TNF-alpha inhibitors such as adalimumab – targeted antibodies that block specific inflammatory mediators.

- Ginger (gingerols): Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis similarly to NSAIDs.
- Boswellic acids: Derived from frankincense resin; inhibit 5-lipoxygenase and are used for joint conditions.
- Green tea extract (EGCG): Epigallocatechin gallate has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity.
Lifestyle Measures
- Anti-inflammatory diet: The Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, olive oil, and fish, is considered particularly effective.
- Regular physical activity: Moderate exercise reduces systemic inflammatory markers such as CRP and IL-6.
- Stress reduction: Chronic stress promotes inflammatory responses via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
- Adequate sleep: Sleep deprivation increases pro-inflammatory cytokines.
- Weight management: Adipose tissue, especially visceral fat, produces pro-inflammatory adipokines.

Important Notes and Risks
Not every anti-inflammatory measure is suitable for everyone. Pharmacological therapies such as NSAIDs can cause stomach, kidney, or heart problems with long-term use. Corticosteroids have significant side effects when taken continuously. Natural compounds are generally well tolerated, but interactions with medications can still occur. Self-treatment without medical supervision is not recommended, especially for chronic conditions.
