Rubella is an infectious disease caused by parvovirus B19, which often occurs in children but can also affect adults.
The disease is mainly transmitted via droplet infection, for example through sneezing, coughing or close contact with infected people. While the disease is mild in most cases, there are certain risk groups in which it can cause serious complications.
A typical symptom of rubella is a characteristic skin rash, which initially appears on the face. This so-called ""butterfly erythema"" mainly affects the cheeks and gives them a reddened, conspicuous appearance. As the disease progresses, the rash can spread like a net to the arms, legs and trunk. This is often accompanied by flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, fatigue and headaches or aching limbs. Adults often also experience joint pain, which can last for weeks. An increased risk exists for pregnant women, as the infection can endanger the unborn child. In rare cases, it can lead to anaemia or other complications such as hydrops fetalis. People with a weakened immune system or haematopoietic disorders are also particularly at risk. If there is an existing iron deficiency, which can affect haematopoiesis, the course of the disease can also be more severe and should be monitored by a doctor.
There is no specific treatment for rubella. Therapy focuses on relieving the symptoms, for example with painkillers or fever-reducing measures. Sufficient rest, hydration and a balanced diet are essential, especially for patients at risk. The disease usually heals itself, but leaves behind lifelong immunity, meaning that re-infection is rare.As the risk of infection is highest even before the typical rash appears, preventing transmission is challenging. However, regular hand washing and good hygiene practices can minimise the risk. Ringworm is particularly common in communal facilities such as schools or nurseries, which is why precautionary measures are required in the event of an outbreak.Verwandte Produkte
