Things worth knowing about "Alum"

Alum is a natural mineral compound with astringent properties, widely used in medicine, cosmetics, and food processing for its ability to constrict tissue.

What is Alum?

Alum (chemical name: potassium aluminium sulfate, KAl(SO₄)₂·12H₂O) is a water-soluble double salt from the sulfate group. It occurs naturally as a mineral and can also be produced synthetically. The most commonly used form is potassium alum, though variants such as ammonium alum and chrome alum also exist. Alum has a pronounced astringent effect on tissues and mucous membranes, which accounts for its versatile use in medicine, cosmetics, and industry.

Composition and Properties

Alum forms colorless, crystalline solids and dissolves readily in water. Its key chemical properties include:

  • Astringent effect: Alum tightens pores and blood vessels by causing protein denaturation at the tissue surface.
  • Antimicrobial effect: It inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi.
  • Hemostatic effect: Alum promotes blood clotting and stops minor bleeding.
  • Odor-inhibiting effect: By reducing bacterial activity, it acts as a deodorant.

Medical and Cosmetic Applications

Wound Care and Styptic Use

Alum has been traditionally used to stop bleeding from small cuts, such as those from shaving. Alum blocks (styptic pencils or shaving stones) are applied directly to the wound, stopping bleeding through their hemostatic action.

Antiperspirant and Deodorant

In natural deodorants and antiperspirants, alum is used as an effective alternative to synthetic aluminium chloride compounds. It reduces sweating and inhibits odor-causing bacteria without permanently clogging pores.

Oral and Dental Care

Due to its astringent and antimicrobial properties, alum is used in mouthwashes and for the treatment of mild gum inflammation (gingivitis). It tones gum tissue and can inhibit bacterial growth in the oral cavity.

Skin Care and Dermatology

Alum is applied in cases of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), acne, and oily or blemish-prone skin. Its pore-tightening effect makes it a popular ingredient in facial toners and astringent skincare products.

Use in Food Processing

In the food industry, alum is approved as a food additive E520 (aluminium sulfate). It serves as a firming agent, for example in the production of pickled cucumbers or maraschino cherries to maintain crunchiness. In some countries, it is also used as a leavening agent. Within the European Union, its use in food products is strictly regulated.

Safety and Risks

Alum is generally considered safe for external use in normal amounts. However, the following risks may arise with excessive or long-term application:

  • Skin irritation: In individuals with sensitive skin, alum may cause redness or irritation.
  • Aluminium exposure: Regular intake through food or cosmetics raises concerns about potential systemic aluminium accumulation. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has established limits for this.
  • Eye irritation: Direct contact with the eyes should be avoided.
  • Ingestion: Large quantities of alum should not be swallowed, as this can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
