Things worth knowing about "E462"

E462 (Ethylcellulose) is an approved food additive used as a carrier, binder, and filler in food supplements and pharmaceutical products.

What is E462 (Ethylcellulose)?

E462 is the European designation for Ethylcellulose, a semi-synthetic additive derived from natural cellulose. Cellulose is a plant-based dietary fibre found in the cell walls of plants. During the production of ethylcellulose, the hydroxyl groups of cellulose are replaced with ethyl groups, resulting in a water-insoluble, thermoplastic polymer.

In the food industry, E462 is primarily used as a carrier substance, binder, and filler. Since it is neither digested nor absorbed by the human body, it is considered a calorie-free dietary fibre. In the European Union, E462 is approved for specific applications under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008.

Origin and Production

Ethylcellulose is produced industrially by reacting alkali cellulose with chloroethane (ethyl chloride). The raw material, cellulose, is typically sourced from wood pulp or cotton linters. The final product is a white to off-white powder or granule that is insoluble in water but soluble in various organic solvents.

Use in Food and Dietary Supplements

  • Capsule shells: Ethylcellulose is used as a shell material for hard capsules in dietary supplements.
  • Tablet coatings: In the pharmaceutical industry, it serves as a film coating for tablets to protect the active ingredient from moisture or to enable delayed release.
  • Binder and filler: It improves the consistency and processability of foods and supplements.
  • Fat replacer: Research is exploring ethylcellulose as a structuring agent for vegetable oils (so-called oleogels) to replace saturated fats.

Safety and Health Assessment

Ethylcellulose is not digested by humans or animals and passes through the gastrointestinal tract largely unchanged. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has classified E462 as safe. The American FDA also regards ethylcellulose as a Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) substance.

No significant allergic reactions or intolerances are known. Since the substance is chemically inert and leaves the body undigested, health risks at usual intake levels are considered very low. Intake within the context of a balanced diet is considered safe as long as the maximum levels established by the EU are respected.

Comparison with Other Cellulose Compounds

Ethylcellulose (E462) belongs to the family of cellulose derivatives in the list of food additives. Related compounds include:

  • E460 – Microcrystalline cellulose and powdered cellulose
  • E461 – Methyl cellulose
  • E463 – Hydroxypropyl cellulose
  • E464 – Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose
  • E465 – Methyl ethyl cellulose

Compared to other cellulose ethers, ethylcellulose is distinguished by its water insolubility, making it particularly suitable for film coatings and sustained-release formulations.

Labelling Requirements

When E462 is used in a food product or dietary supplement, it must be declared on the ingredient list either as E462 or as Ethylcellulose. This is required under the EU Food Information Regulation (FIR, Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011).
